A group of ancient tribal leaders and their families gather in a rugged valley of vineyards and stone fortifications under the symbol of a lion.

People of the tribe of Judah, the royal tribe of David.

The Tribe of Judah consists of the descendants of the fourth son of Jacob and Leah, who eventually became the dominant political and royal power in Israel. The patriarch Judah received a blessing from his father stating that the scepter would not depart from his line (Genesis 49:8–10). During the conquest of Canaan, the tribe was assigned a vast territory in the southern hill country, including the wilderness of Zin and the city of Hebron (Joshua 15:1–12). The text identifies this group as the primary lineage through which the promised monarchy was established and maintained.

The organization of the tribe is defined by its prominent leaders, warriors, and royal figures throughout the biblical narrative. Caleb son of Jephunneh represented the tribe as a spy and later secured the territory of Hebron as an inheritance (Numbers 13:6, Joshua 14:13–14). Boaz served as a kinsman-redeemer in Bethlehem, marrying Ruth to continue the family line (Ruth 4:9–10). His descendant David was anointed as king, establishing a dynasty that ruled from Jerusalem (1 Samuel 16:13, 2 Samuel 5:3–5). Within the royal court, Joab led the military forces during the expansion of the kingdom (2 Samuel 8:16). Later, Hezekiah oversaw religious reforms and defended the capital against the Assyrian empire (2 Kings 18:1–7). Following the Babylonian exile, Zerubbabel led the first wave of returnees to rebuild the foundation of the temple (Ezra 3:2–8).

The tribe remains central to the biblical story because of the Davidic covenant, which promised an eternal kingdom to David’s offspring (2 Samuel 7:12–16). While the northern tribes were scattered, the tribe of Judah preserved the line of the kings and the temple worship in Jerusalem. The New Testament concludes this lineage with Jesus, who is identified as the lion of the tribe of Judah and the legal heir to the throne of David (Matthew 1:1–16, Revelation 5:5). The text does not say that every member of the tribe remained faithful, as many kings and commoners are recorded as turning to idolatry, yet the tribal identity persisted through the Roman period.
