Background and Family

Hathath appears exclusively in the genealogical records of the tribe of Judah. According to 1 Chronicles 4:13, he was the son of Othniel, who was the son of Kenaz. His father, Othniel, is a major figure in the Book of Judges, recognized as the man who delivered Israel from the Mesopotamian king Cushan-rishathaim (Judges 3:9–11). Through his father's marriage to Achsah, the daughter of Caleb, Hathath was part of one of the most prestigious bloodlines in the southern territory of Canaan.

The Hebrew name Hathath (חֲתַת) is generally understood to mean "fearful" or "terror." In the context of ancient Hebrew naming conventions, such names often reflected the circumstances of birth or the parents' aspirations, though the specific reason for this name is not recorded.

Major Life Events

The biblical record for Hathath is confined to a single mention in the Book of Chronicles. Consequently, there are no recorded life events, speeches, or specific actions attributed to him. He is presented strictly as a link in the generational chain of the tribe of Judah. His existence represents the continuation of the line of Othniel in the Promised Land following the initial conquest under Joshua.

Relationship to Other Biblical Figures

Hathath’s primary significance in the text is his relationship to his father, Othniel. As the son of a Judge, Hathath lived in the shadow of a national hero. The text also mentions Meonothai in the same verse; while the phrasing "The sons of Othniel: Hathath and Meonothai" is found in some translations, the Hebrew syntax in 1 Chronicles 4:13–14 has led some scholars to debate whether Meonothai was a brother to Hathath or a separate branch of the family. Regardless, Hathath stands as the direct legal heir to the household of Othniel.

Spiritual Significance

Although Hathath is a silent figure in the biblical narrative, his inclusion in 1 Chronicles is theologically meaningful. The genealogies were compiled during the Post-Exilic period to help returning Israelites reclaim their heritage and land portions. By documenting Hathath, the chronicler affirms that the line of Othniel—a man empowered by the Spirit of the Lord—endured. It reinforces the theme of God's faithfulness to the families of those who served Him during the tumultuous era of the Judges.
