Historical Books

The Historical Books provide a narrative account of the nation of Israel from its settlement in the land to its eventual exile and return. The text introduces Gideon, a judge who defeats the Midianites with a small force of three hundred men (Judges 6:11), and Samson, a judge endowed with supernatural strength to fight the Philistines (Judges 13:24). As the era of judges concludes, Eli serves as the high priest at Shiloh and mentors the young prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1:3, 1:20). Samuel eventually anoints Saul as the first king of the United Monarchy (1 Samuel 9:2). Following the death of Saul and his son Jonathan (1 Samuel 14:6), the kingdom passes to David, the son of Jesse (Ruth 4:17). David establishes his capital with the help of Joab (1 Samuel 26:6), and receives a divine covenant through Nathan the Prophet (2 Samuel 7:2).

The monarchy reaches its peak under Solomon, who builds the first Temple (2 Samuel 5:14), but the kingdom divides under his son Rehoboam (1 King 11:43). In the northern kingdom of Israel, Jeroboam son of Nebat establishes unauthorized worship at Bethel (1 Kings 11:26), a practice later challenged by Elijah the Tishbite (1 Kings 17:1). The prophet Elisha succeeds Elijah and performs miracles for figures such as The Shunammite Woman (2 Kings 4:8). Meanwhile, the southern kingdom of Judah is ruled by various monarchs, including Hezekiah, who survives an Assyrian siege led by The Rabshakeh (2 Kings 16:20, 18:17). Later, Josiah initiates religious reforms after the Book of the Law is rediscovered in the Temple (1 Kings 13:2).

The narrative concludes with the fall of Jerusalem and the subsequent Persian period. Zedekiah witnesses the destruction of the city (2 Kings 24:17), while Jeremiah predicts the length of the coming exile (2 Chronicles 35:25). During the period of Persian rule, Ahasuerus reigns as king and eventually marries Esther (Ezra 4:6, Esther 2:7). Together with Mordecai she works to thwart a genocidal plot orchestrated by the official Haman (Esther 2:5, 3:1). These accounts record the transition of the people from a tribal confederacy to a sovereign monarchy and finally to a subject population within a foreign empire.
