A group of Levite priests and leaders perform sacred duties around the Tabernacle in the desert, handling holy vessels and structural components under the guidance of Moses and Aaron.

The priestly tribe, set apart for the service of the tabernacle and temple.

The Tribe of Levi consists of the descendants of Levi, who was the third son born to Leah in Mesopotamia (Genesis 29:34). In his final blessing, Jacob rebuked Levi for his violence during the massacre at Shechem stating that his descendants would be scattered throughout the other tribes of Israel (Genesis 49:5–7). Consequently, the tribe did not receive a single block of territory like the other tribes; instead, they were assigned forty-eight specific cities and their surrounding pasturelands distributed across the land (Joshua 21:1–3).

The tribe is organized into three primary clans based on the sons of the patriarch: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari (Numbers 3:17). Gershon was the eldest son whose descendants transported the tabernacle’s curtains and coverings (Numbers 3:25–26). Kohath was the patriarch of the clan responsible for the most holy objects, including the ark and the altars (Numbers 3:31). Merari was the son whose descendants managed the structural frames and pillars of the sanctuary (Numbers 3:36–37). Within the Kohathite line, Aaron was appointed as the first High Priest, establishing a hereditary priesthood for his sons, such as Eleazar, who succeeded him (Numbers 20:25–28). Other notable members include Moses, the prophet who led the Israelites out of Egypt (Exodus 3:10), and Korah, who led a rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron (Numbers 16:1–3).

The tribe’s role expanded as the nation transitioned from a tabernacle to a temple. Samuel, a descendant of the Kohathites, served as a prophet and judge who anointed the first kings (1 Samuel 1:1, 10:1). During the monarchy, Asaph served as King David’s chief singer and composed psalms for worship (1 Chronicles 16:7). Later, Hilkiah the High Priest recovered the Book of the Law during temple renovations, sparking a national reformation (2 Kings 22:8).

In the larger biblical story, the Tribe of Levi represents the mediation between God and the people. This priestly lineage continued through the return from exile with Ezra the Scribe, who restored the Law in Jerusalem (Ezra 7:1–10). The New Testament identifies John the Baptist, as a member of this priestly line who prepared the way for Jesus (Luke 1:5–17). Even in the early church, Levites like Barnabas continued to serve as leaders and mentors within the community (Acts 4:36).
