According to the genealogical records found in 1 Chronicles 6:35, he was the son of Elkanah (an earlier ancestor of the same name as Samuel’s father) and the father of Tohu (also referred to as Nahath or Zophai in varying genealogical lists).

Though a Levite by blood, Zuph and his immediate descendants resided in the hill country of Ephraim. This geographic placement is consistent with the Levites' role in Israel, as they did not receive a continuous land inheritance but were instead scattered among the other tribes to provide spiritual leadership. The specific area of his residence, Ramathaim-zophim, literally translates to "the two heights of the Zophites," suggesting that the family of Zuph was prominent enough to have the region named after them.
