A group of ancient men coordinate the transport of a complex sanctuary structure and its decorative textiles across a desert landscape.

Every person in the Bible tagged Levites on Everybody in the Bible.

The Levites are the descendants of the patriarch Levi who were set apart for the service of the sanctuary and the religious administration of Israel. Unlike the other tribes, they were not given a specific territorial inheritance of land, but were instead assigned to serve the Tabernacle and later the Temple (Numbers 18:20–24). The group was organized into three primary clans based on the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The text describes their duties as hereditary, with specific families responsible for transporting, guarding, and maintaining the holy site and its furnishings (Numbers 3:5–10).

The organization of the Levites is detailed through genealogies that define their specific roles. Gershon was the eldest son of Levi, and his descendants were responsible for the curtains and coverings of the Tabernacle (Genesis 46:11, Numbers 3:25). Merari was another son of Levi whose clan managed the structural frames and pillars of the sanctuary (Genesis 46:11, Numbers 3:36). Moses, a descendant of Kohath served as the prophet who led the Israelites out of Egypt and received the law (Exodus 2:10). Libni founded a clan that served during the Exodus (Exodus 6:17), while Hebron founded a clan of administrators (Exodus 6:18). Later, Jehiel the Gershonite was placed in charge of the Temple treasuries under King David (1 Chronicles 23:8).

As the history of Israel progressed, the Levites took on roles as musicians, gatekeepers, and teachers. Zaccur led a division of singers (1 Chronicles 25:2), and Shemaiah was among the capable gatekeepers of the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 26:4). Even after the Babylonian exile, the Levites maintained their distinct identity. Shallum was a chief official whose family returned to Jerusalem to resume their duties (1 Chronicles 9:17). The New Testament also identifies specific individuals by this lineage, such as Barnabas, a Levite from Cyprus who became a leader in the early church at Antioch (Acts 4:36).

The presence of the Levites throughout the biblical narrative ensures the continuity of the sacrificial system and the preservation of the law. From the early days of the Exodus to the rebuilding of Jerusalem, they functioned as the essential link between the people and the formal worship of God. Their role was so central that even the ancestors of the prophet Samuel such as Elkanah, and Zuph are identified by their Levite heritage to establish their standing within the religious community (1 Samuel 1:1, 1 Chronicles 6:33–35). The text does not say that all Levites were priests, as the priesthood was specifically reserved for the descendants of Aaron, but all priests were required to be Levites.
