Background and Family

Jathniel was born into the Tribe of Levi, the tribe set apart by God for the service of the Tabernacle and, later, the Temple. He was the fourth son of Meshelemiah (also known as Shelemiah), a member of the Korahite clan. The Korahites were a prominent sub-group of Levites who had been redeemed from the judgment of their ancestor Korah to become faithful servants of the Lord. Jathniel’s father, Meshelemiah, was a noted gatekeeper, and Jathniel was one of seven brothers, including Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael, Zebadiah, Elam, Jehohanan, and Eliehoenai.

The biblical record concerning Jathniel is concentrated entirely within the organizational lists of the chronicler. During the period of the Divided Monarchy, Jathniel was appointed as a gatekeeper. This role was not merely a security position; it was a consecrated office.
