A group of ancient Levite men and women perform various duties of service and worship within a sunlit limestone courtyard.

Levites whose specific service is not recorded in the Chronicles rosters.

The group known as Other Levites consists of individuals belonging to the tribe of Levi who performed various functions throughout Israelite history, though their specific duties are not always categorized within the formal temple rosters. The tribe was set apart for the service of the tabernacle and later the temple, but the text records their presence in diverse roles ranging from clan patriarchs to prophets and early church leaders. Membership in this group is determined by genealogical descent from Levi, as seen in the records of the Exodus and the post-exilic restoration (Exodus 6:16–25; Ezra 2:40).

The organization of these individuals often follows the three main branches of the tribe: the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites. Mahli founded the Mahlite clan that maintained the family line through the wilderness era (Exodus 6:19). Shimei established the Shimeite clan as a grandson of the patriarch Levi (Numbers 3:18). Mishael served a specific ritual function when he removed the bodies of Nadab and Abihu from the sanctuary (Exodus 6:22). Miriam held a unique leadership role by leading the Israelites in song after the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20). In the later monarchical period, Abijah served as a judge, though his conduct prompted the people to request a king (1 Samuel 8:2–3). During the return from exile, Sherebiah was recognized as a man of insight who assisted in the restoration of the law (Ezra 8:18).

The text also identifies several prominent figures from the New Testament era as belonging to this tribal lineage. Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron and the mother of the prophet who prepared the way for the Messiah (Luke 1:5). Her son, John the Baptist, fulfilled his ancestral calling by baptizing repentant Israelites in the Jordan River (Matthew 3:1–6). Barnabas, a Levite from Cyprus, became a central figure in the early church by mentoring new leaders and selling his property to support the community (Acts 4:36–37). Mark accompanied these leaders on missionary journeys, contributing to the spread of the gospel despite early disagreements (Acts 12:12; Acts 15:37–39). These Levites represent the continuity of the priestly tribe across centuries of biblical history, ensuring that the genealogical requirements for service were documented.
