According to the genealogical records found in 1 Chronicles 24, Shoham was the son of Jaaziah. He was a member of the Merarite branch of the Levites, one of the three primary divisions of the tribe (alongside the Kohathites and Gershonites).

He is recorded alongside his brothers: Beno, Zaccur, and Ibri. This specific lineage represents a later branch of the Merari family tree, appearing after the traditional heads, Mahli and Mushi. The inclusion of Shoham and his siblings indicates the expansion and continued vitality of the Merarite line throughout the monarchic period.
