Tribe of Issachar

The Tribe of Issachar consists of the descendants of the ninth son of Jacob, whose lineage and territorial inheritance are detailed across the books of Genesis, Numbers, Joshua, and 1 Chronicles. The progenitor, Issachar was born to Leah, who named him to reflect the hire or wages she paid for his conception (Genesis 30:17–18). In the blessing of Jacob, the patriarch describes this tribe as a rawboned donkey crouching between two saddlebags, choosing to bend its shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor (Genesis 49:14–15). The tribe’s initial strength was established through the four sons of the patriarch: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron (Genesis 46:13, Numbers 26:23–24).

The internal organization of the tribe is recorded through extensive genealogies that highlight military strength and leadership. During the wilderness wanderings, Nethanel, the son of Zuar represented the tribe by presenting offerings for the dedication of the altar (Numbers 7:18). Later records in 1 Chronicles focus on the descendants of the firstborn son, Tola including Uzzi, and his brothers Rephaiah, Jeriel, Jahmai, Ibsam, and Shemuel all of whom were heads of their ancestral houses (1 Chronicles 7:2). The lineage of Uzzi produced Izrahiah, whose five sons—Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah—served as chiefs and led a force of thirty-six thousand men ready for battle (1 Chronicles 7:3–4).

In the broader history of the nation, the Tribe of Issachar occupied a territory that included the Jezreel Valley, a region of strategic importance and agricultural wealth (Joshua 19:17–23). The tribe produced significant political figures during the period of the monarchy. Baasha, the son of Ahijah rose to power by killing the king of Israel and seizing the throne for himself (1 Kings 15:27–28). The text notes that the men of this tribe were recognized for their understanding of the times and their knowledge of what the nation should do (1 Chronicles 12:32). Through its combination of agricultural labor, military service, and political leadership, the tribe remained a distinct and influential component of the northern kingdom.
