Tribe of Zebulun

The Tribe of Zebulun consists of the descendants of the tenth son of Jacob, whose lineage and territorial inheritance are documented across the Pentateuch and the historical books. The origins of the group are established in the book of Genesis, where Zebulun is identified as the sixth son born to Leah (Genesis 30:19–20). When Jacob blesses his sons before his death, he specifies that Zebulun will dwell at the shore of the sea and become a haven for ships (Genesis 49:13). During the migration to Egypt, the household of the patriarch includes his three sons, Sered, Elon, and Jahleel, who are identified as the founders of the primary tribal clans (Genesis 46:14).

The organization of the tribe during the wilderness wanderings is defined by specific leadership and census records. Eliab is appointed to assist Moses in numbering the people and serves as the representative who presents the tribal offering for the dedication of the altar (Numbers 1:9, 7:24). The text identifies Helon as the father of this leader (Numbers 2:7). The census taken in the plains of Moab records that the descendants of Sered, Elon, and Jahleel numbered 60,500 men (Numbers 26:26–27). When the land of Canaan is divided by lot, the tribe receives a territory in the north, situated between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean (Joshua 19:10–16).

In the broader biblical narrative, the tribe is noted for its military contributions and its geographical significance. During the era of the judges, the people of Zebulun are described as those who risked their lives on the heights of the field to support the campaign against Sisera (Judges 5:18). The text also records that a judge named Elon led Israel for ten years and was buried in the tribal territory at Aijalon (Judges 12:11–12). Later, the tribe provides fifty thousand experienced warriors to help David secure his kingdom at Hebron (1 Chronicles 12:33). The region assigned to the tribe eventually forms part of the area of Galilee, fulfilling the prophetic descriptions of the land located toward the sea (Isaiah 9:1).
