Tribe of Ephraim

The Tribe of Ephraim descends from the younger son of Joseph, who received a preferential blessing from his grandfather Jacob. Although Manasseh was the firstborn, Jacob intentionally crossed his hands to place his right hand on the head of Ephraim foretelling that the younger brother’s descendants would become a greater multitude of nations (Genesis 48:14–19). The tribe eventually settled in the central hill country of Canaan, a fertile region that included significant religious and political sites such as Shechem and Shiloh (Joshua 16:5–8).

The lineage of the tribe is documented through several genealogical records that highlight its growth and early struggles. Ephraim himself fathered several sons, including Shuthelah, who founded the Shuthelahite clan, and Becher, who established the Becherite clan (Numbers 26:35). The text records a period of mourning for the patriarch after his sons Ezer and Elead were killed by the men of Gath while attempting to take livestock (1 Chronicles 7:21–22). Following this tragedy, he fathered Beriah, whose name was chosen to mark the misfortune of the family (1 Chronicles 7:23). A notable female descendant, Sheerah is credited with building the towns of Upper and Lower Beth-horon (1 Chronicles 7:24).

The tribe produced many of the most influential figures in the history of Israel. Joshua, who was the son of Nun and the grandson of Elishama led the nation during the conquest of the promised land (Numbers 13:8, Joshua 1:1–2). During the period of the judges, Deborah held court under a palm tree in the hill country of Ephraim to settle disputes and direct military campaigns (Judges 4:4–5). In the era of the monarchy, the tribe provided elite soldiers for the royal court, such as Helez the Pelonite, who served as a divisional commander (2 Samuel 23:26).

Ephraim eventually became the dominant power in the northern region, so much so that the prophets often used the tribal name to refer to the entire Northern Kingdom of Israel. The political split from the house of David was led by Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephraimite who became the first king of the breakaway ten tribes (1 Kings 11:26). His son, Nadab briefly succeeded him before the dynasty was overthrown (1 Kings 15:25–28). Throughout the biblical narrative, the tribe is characterized by its large population, central location, and frequent leadership roles in both military and civil affairs.
