Background and Family

Resheph is identified in 1 Chronicles 7:25 as a descendant of Ephraim, the son of the patriarch Joseph. The genealogy records that Resheph was the son of Beriah. This familial placement is significant within the context of the tribe's history; Beriah was born to Ephraim in his old age, named so because 'tragedy had come upon his house' (1 Chronicles 7:23), referring to the death of Ephraim’s older sons at the hands of the men of Gath. Resheph represents the continued restoration and proliferation of the tribe after this devastating loss.

According to the text, Resheph’s siblings included Rephah and a sister named Sheerah, who is notable for building Beth-horon. The lineage continues through Resheph to his son, Telah, and eventually through several more generations to Joshua, the leader of the Israelite conquest of Canaan.

In the scholarly study of the Chronicles, figures like Resheph serve a structural purpose rather than a narrative one. Because the list in 1 Chronicles 7:25–27 ends with Joshua (the son of Nun), Resheph is historically situated as a distant ancestor to one of Israel’s greatest military and spiritual leaders. While Resheph did not live to see the Exodus or the conquest, his place in the record ensures he is recognized as a forefather to the house of Joshua.
