People of the tribe of Benjamin, the tribe of Saul and of Paul.

The Tribe of Benjamin consists of the descendants of the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, whose birth resulted in his mother's death near Bethlehem (Genesis 35:16–18). Before his own death, Jacob described this tribe as a ravenous wolf that devours prey in the morning and divides the spoil at night (Genesis 49:27). During the division of the Promised Land, the tribe received a territory situated between the larger tribes of Judah and Ephraim encompassing significant cities such as Jerusalem and Jericho (Joshua 18:11–28).

The lineage of this tribe is defined by several prominent figures who shaped the early history of the Israelite monarchy. Benjamin is the patriarch whose journey to Egypt and subsequent protection by his brothers served as the catalyst for his family's reconciliation (Genesis 45:14). Bela is identified as the firstborn son who established the Belaitic clan during the initial settlement in Egypt (Genesis 46:21). Ehud served as a judge who utilized his left-handedness to assassinate the Moabite king Eglon and liberate the Israelites (Judges 3:15–21). Saul became the first king of Israel, though his reign eventually ended in divine rejection (1 Samuel 9:1–2). Jonathan was the heir to the throne who formed a deep covenant of friendship with David (1 Samuel 18:1–4). Abner served as the commander of the royal army and initially supported the house of Saul before attempting to unite the nation under David (2 Samuel 3:12).

Internal conflicts and shifting loyalties frequently characterized the tribe's role in the biblical narrative. Following the death of the first king, Ish-bosheth ruled over the northern tribes for two years while engaged in a civil war against the house of David (2 Samuel 2:8–10). During the rebellion of Absalom, Shimei famously cursed David and threw stones at him, accusing the king of being a man of blood (2 Samuel 16:5–8). Later, Sheba attempted to lead a secession of the northern tribes by declaring that the people had no portion in David (2 Samuel 20:1–2).

Despite these tensions, the tribe remained significant throughout the period of the exile and the return to Jerusalem. Mordecai was a Benjaminite living in Susa who uncovered a plot against the king and worked to prevent the destruction of his people (Esther 2:5–7). Jeremiah acted as a prophet from the Benjaminite town of Anathoth, where he purchased a field as a sign of future hope during the Babylonian siege (Jeremiah 32:6–9). The tribe is consistently noted for its military skill and its enduring presence within the southern kingdom of Judah.
