Alemeth, Son of Becher

Background and Family

Alemeth is situated within the foundational genealogy of the tribe of Benjamin. According to 1 Chronicles 7:8, he was the son of Becher, who was himself the second son of Benjamin (Genesis 46:21). The historical context of this entry places Alemeth during the latter portion of the Egyptian sojourn or the early wilderness period, as these genealogies trace the expansion of the patriarchal families into distinct clans.

Alemeth was one of nine brothers: Zemirah, Joash, Eliezer, Elioenai, Omri, Jeremoth, Abijah, and Anathoth. The Chronicler notes that all these individuals were recognized as "sons of Becher," signifying their status as distinct ancestral heads within the tribe. The text further identifies these men as "mighty men of valor" (1 Chronicles 7:9), a term suggesting that Alemeth and his siblings were not only genealogical placeholders but also leaders capable of military or communal oversight.

Relationship to Other Biblical Figures

As a grandson of Benjamin, Alemeth was a direct descendant of Jacob and Rachel. His familial connections link him to the broader narrative of the twelve tribes. Specifically, his relationship with his brother Anathoth is noteworthy, as both names—Alemeth and Anathoth—are also the names of Levite cities within the territory of Benjamin (Joshua 21:18). While the individual Alemeth predates the establishment of these cities, his name remains an integral part of the Benjamite identity.

Spiritual Significance

The preservation of Alemeth’s name in the post-exilic records of 1 Chronicles serves a specific theological purpose. By documenting the sons of Becher, the biblical author demonstrates God's faithfulness in fulfilling the promise to make the descendants of Jacob fruitful and numerous. Even though the tribe of Benjamin suffered significant losses later in judges' period, the record of individuals like Alemeth confirms the original strength and divine blessing bestowed upon the line of Benjamin from its inception in Egypt.
