Background and Family

Gedor appears within the tribal genealogies of Benjamin during the period of the United Monarchy, a time when Israel transitioned from a loose confederation of tribes under judges to a centralized kingdom. According to 1 Chronicles 8:30-31 and 1 Chronicles 9:36-37, Gedor was one of the many sons of Jeiel (traditionally identified as Abiel) and Maacah. His family was rooted in the city of Gibeon, a strategically important location just north of Jerusalem.

The household of Gedor was extensive and influential. His siblings included prominent figures such as Abdon, Zur, Baal, Nadab, Ner, Kish, Ahio, Zecher (also called Zechariah), and Mikloth. This specific branch of the Benjaminite tribe is of paramount importance to the Chronicler because it produced King Saul. Gedor was the paternal uncle of King Saul (through his brother Kish) and the uncle of Abner, the commander of Israel’s army (through his brother Ner).

Gedor’s identity is defined entirely by his relationships. He is part of a generation of brothers who formed the backbone of the Saulide dynasty’s early support structure.

"And his firstborn son Abdon, then Zur, Baal, Nadab, Gedor, Ahio, Zecher, and Mikloth." (1 Chronicles 8:30-31)

The proximity of his name to Kish and Ner in these lists emphasizes his high status. While Kish and Ner are highlighted due to their famous sons (Saul and Abner), Gedor’s inclusion ensures that the full scope of the family tree is preserved, demonstrating the legal and ancestral legitimacy of the house of Saul.
