Tribe of Asher

The Tribe of Asher consists of the descendants of the eighth son of Jacob born to Zilpah, the handmaid of Leah (Genesis 30:12–13). Before his death, Jacob prophesied that the bread of this tribe would be rich and provide royal delicacies (Genesis 49:20). Moses later echoed this blessing, stating the tribe would be favored by its brothers and dip its feet in oil (Deuteronomy 33:24). The tribe was assigned territory along the Mediterranean coast, stretching from Mount Carmel toward the city of Sidon, an area noted for its fertile soil and olive groves (Joshua 19:24–31).

The internal structure of the tribe is recorded through extensive genealogies that track its growth from the Egyptian sojourn through the era of the monarchy. Asher entered Egypt with four sons and one daughter, Serah, who is uniquely noted in both the initial migration and the later census (Genesis 46:17, Numbers 26:46). Among his sons, Imnah was the firstborn and founder of the Imnite clan (Numbers 26:44). During the wilderness wanderings, Pagiel, the son of Ochran served as the tribal prince and assisted Moses in the census (Numbers 1:13). Later generations produced influential leaders such as Japhlet, whose descendants defined specific geographic borders in the land of Canaan (1 Chronicles 7:32–33). The tribe was also known for its military strength, producing men like Bezer, who was recorded among the mighty men of valor and heads of their fathers' houses (1 Chronicles 7:37–40). Other notable descendants include Zophah, a patriarch who fathered eleven sons, and Malchiel, who founded the Malchielite clan (1 Chronicles 7:31–36).

In the broader biblical narrative, the tribe is characterized by its agricultural wealth and its occasional struggle to fully displace the Canaanites from its coastal allotment (Judges 1:31–32). While the tribe is often mentioned in the context of military levies and administrative lists, it also appears in the New Testament. Anna, a prophetess and daughter of Phanuel is identified as being from the tribe of Asher (Luke 2:36). She is recorded as a widow who stayed in the temple fasting and praying, eventually recognizing the infant Jesus as the redeemer of Jerusalem. This inclusion demonstrates the continued identity of the tribe long after the Assyrian exile of the northern kingdom.
