The biblical record in Genesis 46:17 and 1 Chronicles 7:30 identifies him as the brother of Imnah, Ishvah, and Ishvi, and the brother of Serah. The specific mention of his sister, Serah, is a rare occurrence in these genealogies, suggesting that Beriah belonged to a family of significant standing or one that maintained exceptionally meticulous records.

According to the Genesis narrative, Beriah was part of the seventy members of the house of Jacob who entered Egypt. This migration was a transformative event for the family, as it transitioned them from a nomadic clan in Canaan to a growing nation under the protection of Joseph in the land of Goshen.

Beriah is credited with founding the Beriite clan (Numbers 26:44). Furthermore, Beriah’s own sons, Heber and Malchiel, founded their own sub-clans: the Heberites and the Malchielites (Numbers 26:45). The survival of these names across hundreds of years of slavery and the subsequent forty-year wilderness trek underscores the social stability and organizational importance of the families descended from Beriah.

As a son of Asher, Beriah was a nephew to the heads of the other eleven tribes of Israel, including Judah, Levi, and Joseph. His immediate family context is one of the most clearly defined among the grandsons of Jacob. By the time of the late genealogical records in 1 Chronicles 7:31, his son Malchiel is noted as the father of Birzaith, extending the recorded line of Beriah into at least the fourth generation following the entry into Egypt. This continuity suggests that Beriah's line was central to the identity of the Tribe of Asher.
