Tribe of Gad

The Tribe of Gad originated with the seventh son of Jacob, whose name was chosen by the matriarch Leah to signify good fortune (Genesis 30:10–11). Before his death, Jacob prophesied that while this tribe would be raided by marauders, they would ultimately prevail by attacking the heels of their enemies (Genesis 49:19). The foundational structure of the group was established by the sons of Gad, who migrated to Egypt as clan patriarchs (Genesis 46:16). Among these were Ziphion, the eldest son and founder of the Zephonite clan, and Haggi, the founder of the Haggite lineage (Genesis 46:16). Other sons who established tribal divisions included Shuni, Eri, and Areli (Genesis 46:16). The text also identifies Arod as a clan founder and Ezbon as one of the original family members who entered Egypt (Numbers 26:17, Genesis 46:16).

During the Exodus, the tribe was led by Eliasaph son of Deuel, who commanded the tribal division and presented offerings at the tabernacle (Numbers 2:14, 7:42). His father, Deuel is named as the patriarch of this leadership line (Numbers 1:14). When Moses sent spies to scout Canaan, the tribe was represented by Geuel, the son of Machi (Numbers 13:15). Following the conquest, the tribe settled on the eastern side of the Jordan River in the land of Gilead and Bashan (Joshua 13:24–28). In these regions, later leaders such as Joel and Shapham served as tribal authorities (1 Chronicles 5:12).

Genealogical records from the Divided Monarchy list many Gadite family heads, including Abihail, who fathered seven sons such as Michael and Eber (1 Chronicles 5:13–14). Their lineage is traced through ancestors like Huri, Jaroah, and Jeshishai (1 Chronicles 5:14). Other prominent figures include Ahi, and Machir, a landowner who provided for the house of Saul and the army of David (1 Chronicles 5:15, 2 Samuel 9:4).

The tribe occupied a strategic but vulnerable frontier east of the Jordan. Because of this location, they were often the first to face eastern invasions. The text notes that their genealogies were formally registered during the reigns of King Jotham and King Jeroboam, documenting their expansion across Bashan (1 Chronicles 5:11–17). Despite their geographic isolation, the tribe remained a vital military and social component of the biblical narrative.
