Tribe of Manasseh

The Tribe of Manasseh consists of the descendants of the firstborn son of Joseph, who received a specific blessing and land allotment within the nation of Israel. Although Manasseh was the firstborn, his grandfather Jacob intentionally crossed his hands to give the younger brother, Ephraim, the primary blessing (Genesis 48:14–19). The tribe eventually split into two geographic groups: one half settled east of the Jordan River in the regions of Bashan and Gilead, while the other half settled in the land of Canaan (Joshua 17:1–12).

The internal structure of the tribe is defined by several prominent clans and leaders. Machir was the patriarch of the Machirite clan and is noted for conquering the rugged territory of Gilead (Numbers 32:39–40). His son, Gilead became the progenitor of the Gileadite clans that occupied the Transjordan (Numbers 26:29). During the wilderness journey, Gamaliel served as the tribal representative who presented offerings at the dedication of the Tabernacle (Numbers 7:54). The tribe also produced notable military figures such as Gideon, a judge who defeated the Midianites with a small force of three hundred men (Judges 7:7), and Jephthah, a judge who led Israel against the Ammonites (Judges 11:32). Legal precedents were also established through the tribe when Tirzah and her sisters, the daughters of Zelophehad petitioned Moses for the right to inherit their father’s land because he had no sons (Numbers 27:1–7).

The tribe’s history includes various influential families and warriors. Joash is recorded as a patriarch who protected his son from a mob after the destruction of a pagan altar (Judges 6:31). Later genealogies identify mighty men of valor such as Jahdiel and Epher, who were renowned as famous heads of their households (1 Chronicles 5:24). The text also mentions women who shaped the tribal lineage, including Maacah, who bore Peresh and Sheresh (1 Chronicles 7:16).

The Tribe of Manasseh holds a unique place in the biblical narrative due to its dual inheritance on both sides of the Jordan River. This geographic split meant the tribe played a role in the defense of the eastern frontier while also participating in the central religious and political life of Israel. The legal case involving Zelophehad and his daughters ensured that the tribal land remained within the family line, a principle that governed Israelite property law (Numbers 36:6–9). Through its judges and warriors, the tribe remained a significant military and social force throughout the period of the settlement and the monarchy.
