Tribe of Reuben

The Tribe of Reuben consists of the descendants of the firstborn son of Jacob and Leah, whose history is traced from the Egyptian sojourn through the Assyrian exile. The patriarch Reuben is identified as the firstborn, but he lost his birthright because he defiled his father’s bed (Genesis 29:32, Genesis 49:3–4). In the patriarchal blessing, Jacob describes him as unstable as water and declares he will no longer excel (Genesis 49:4). During the census in the wilderness, the tribe was organized into four primary clans founded by the sons of the patriarch: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi (Numbers 26:5–6).

The internal leadership and genealogy of the tribe are documented across several generations. Shedeur is identified as the father of the tribal chief who assisted Moses during the initial census (Numbers 1:5). His son, Elizur served as the leader of the Reubenites and presented offerings during the dedication of the Tabernacle (Numbers 7:30). The tribe also produced notable rebels, including Dathan and Abiram, who were swallowed by the earth after challenging the authority of Moses (Numbers 16:1–32). These men were the sons of Eliab, whose other son Nemuel is also recorded in the tribal register (Numbers 26:8–9).

Later genealogical records in the book of Chronicles detail the families that settled in the Transjordan region. Bela, the son of Azaz is noted for dwelling in Aroer as far as Nebo and Baal Meon (1 Chronicles 5:8). The text also traces a line of descent from Joel through Shimei, Micah, Reaiah, and Baal (1 Chronicles 5:4–5). Within this lineage, Shemaiah is recorded as the father of Gog, who was an ancestor of the later Reubenite leaders (1 Chronicles 5:4). During the period of the Divided Monarchy, Jeiel is identified as a chief alongside Zechariah (1 Chronicles 5:7). The tribal narrative concludes with Beerah, a leader who was carried away into captivity by Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria (1 Chronicles 5:6).

The Tribe of Reuben occupies a distinct place in the biblical narrative as one of the groups that requested land east of the Jordan River. Along with the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh they settled in the cattle-rich lands of Gilead and Bashan on the condition that they cross the river to help the other tribes conquer Canaan (Numbers 32:1–32). Although they were the firstborn line, the text notes that the birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, while the leadership eventually fell to Judah (1 Chronicles 5:1–2). Their geographic isolation east of the Jordan eventually left them vulnerable to the Assyrian invasions that ended their tribal sovereignty.
