Tribe of Dan

The Tribe of Dan consists of the descendants of the patriarch Dan, who was the fifth son of Jacob and the first son born to Bilhah (Genesis 30:6). During the census in the wilderness, the tribe is identified as the descendants of Hushim, who founded the Shuhamite clan (Numbers 26:42). The text records that the tribe was led during the Exodus by Ahiezer, who was the son of Ammishaddai and commanded the rear guard of the camps of Israel (Numbers 10:25).

The members of this tribe are noted for specific skills and roles throughout the early history of Israel. Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach was an artisan filled with the spirit of God to perform all manner of workmanship for the Tabernacle (Exodus 31:6). Centuries later, the tribe produced the judge Samson, who possessed supernatural strength and fought the Philistines (Judges 13:24). His birth was preceded by a divine visitation to Manoah and Samson’s Mother, who was instructed to raise the child as a Nazirite from the womb (Judges 13:2–5).

The identity of the tribe is shaped by the prophetic blessings spoken over their patriarch. Jacob prophesied that Dan would judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel and likened him to a serpent by the way that bites a horse's heels (Genesis 49:16–17). Moses later described the tribe as a lion’s whelp that leaps from Bashan (Deuteronomy 33:22). Although the tribe was originally assigned territory reaching to the Mediterranean coast, the text states they were forced into the mountains by the Amorites and eventually migrated north to capture the city of Laish, which they renamed Dan (Judges 1:34, 18:27–29).

The Tribe of Dan serves as a significant military and cultural component of the nation of Israel. The tribe provided the final division in the marching order of the wilderness wanderings and later secured the northernmost border of the promised land. The text does not say why the tribe is omitted from the genealogical sealings in the later visions of the tribes in the Book of Revelation, though they remain central to the territorial descriptions of the land in the books of Joshua and Ezekiel.
