Southern Kingdom (Judah)

The history of the Southern Kingdom (Judah) begins with the division of the united monarchy, leaving the descendants of David to rule from Jerusalem. While the northern tribes separated, the southern territory maintained the temple and the Davidic lineage, alternating between periods of religious reform and systemic idolatry. The text tracks this history through the reigns of kings, the service of temple officials, and the warnings of prophets who addressed both the royal court and the common people.

The leadership of the kingdom was defined by the Davidic line, though the character of these rulers varied. Asa established an early precedent for reform by removing idols and defeating a massive Cushite army (1 Kings 15:8–15). Later, Hezekiah oversaw a major restoration of the temple and survived an Assyrian siege of Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:1–7). In contrast, Ahaz abandoned these traditions by practicing child sacrifice and replacing the temple altar with a foreign design (2 Kings 16:1–4). The final years of the monarchy were marked by Josiah, who instituted sweeping changes after Hilkiah the High Priest found the Book of the Law (2 Kings 22:3–13). Despite these efforts, the kingdom eventually fell, and Zedekiah witnessed the destruction of the city and the temple before being taken into exile (2 Kings 25:1–7).

Religious life involved a complex interaction between the priesthood and the prophets. Figures like Jehoiada played political roles, such as when he saved the infant Joash, to restore the throne (2 Kings 11:1–12). Prophets frequently confronted the crown regarding spiritual failures. Isaiah advised the court during the Assyrian crisis (2 Kings 19:1–7), while Jeremiah predicted the seventy-year Babylonian exile (Jeremiah 25:11). Even after the fall of Jerusalem, the text follows the remnant under Gedaliah, who was appointed by Babylon but assassinated by Ishmael son of Nethaniah (2 Kings 25:22–25).

The Southern Kingdom (Judah) serves as the primary setting for the preservation of the Davidic covenant. While the northern kingdom was conquered and its people dispersed, the southern kingdom’s history continues through the Babylonian captivity. The text emphasizes that the survival of the people was tied to their adherence to the law, a theme reinforced by scribes like Baruch, who recorded the prophetic warnings that defined the era (Jeremiah 36:4–8).
