The Davidic Covenant

After King David was settled in his palace and God had given him rest from all his enemies, David spoke to the prophet Nathan regarding his desire to build a permanent structure for God. David noted that while he lived in a house of cedar, the ark of God remained in a tent. Nathan initially told the king to do whatever he had in mind, for God was with him. However, that same night, the word of God came to Nathan with a specific message for David. God asked if David was the one to build him a house, noting that he had not dwelt in a house since the day he brought the Israelites out of Egypt, but had moved from place to place in a tent (2 Samuel 7:1-6).

God instructed Nathan to remind David that he was taken from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over Israel. God promised to make David's name great and to provide a place for the people of Israel where they would no longer be disturbed by the wicked. Furthermore, God declared that he would establish a house for David himself. The text states that when David's days are over, God will raise up his offspring to succeed him and will establish his kingdom. This descendant is the one who will build a house for God's name, and God will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. God promised to be his father and he would be God's son (2 Samuel 7:8-14).

Upon hearing these words from Nathan, King David went in and sat before God to offer a prayer of response. He questioned who he was that God had brought him this far, acknowledging that God had spoken about the future of his servant's house. David praised God for his greatness, noting there is no one like him and no God besides him according to all they had heard. He asked that the promise God made concerning his servant and his house be established forever, so that God's name would be magnified. David concluded by requesting that it would please God to bless the house of his servant so that it might continue forever in his sight (2 Samuel 7:18-29).
