King David sits on his throne in a stone courtyard surrounded by his commander, his son, and a kneeling woman who addresses him.

Every person who appears in the book of 2 Samuel, ordered by how often they are mentioned there.

The People of 2 Samuel are introduced during a period of national transition following the death of Saul and Jonathan at Mount Gilboa. The narrative begins with the Amalekite Who Claimed to Kill Saul bringing the royal crown to David, who is subsequently anointed king over the house of Judah (2 Samuel 1:1–10, 2:4). A civil war ensues between the house of David and the house of Saul led by Abner, the commander of the northern forces (2 Samuel 2:8–12). During this conflict, Joab kills Abner to avenge his brother Asahel, who was swifter of foot than a wild gazelle (2 Samuel 2:18–23, 3:27). Following the assassination of Ish-bosheth, the tribes of Israel unite under David’s singular rule in Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5:1–5).

As the kingdom expands, the text focuses on the internal dynamics of the royal court and the military. David shows kindness to Mephibosheth, by restoring his ancestral lands, while his generals like Abishai lead successful campaigns against foreign enemies such as Hadadezer (2 Samuel 8:3, 9:7). However, the narrative shifts to domestic turmoil after David commits adultery with the wife of Uriah the Hittite and arranges the soldier's death (2 Samuel 11:14–17). Nathan the Prophet confronts the king for this act, announcing that the sword will never depart from his house (2 Samuel 12:7–12). This prophecy manifests when Amnon violates his half-sister Tamar, an act that prompts their brother Absalom to murder Amnon and eventually flee (2 Samuel 13:14–29).

The latter half of the book details the rebellion of Absalom, who wins the hearts of the people and forces David to flee Jerusalem. During the retreat, David is cursed by Shimei, but receives vital intelligence from Hushai, who thwarts the strategic advice of the defector Ahithophel (2 Samuel 15:32–37, 16:5–13, 17:14). The rebellion ends when Joab kills Absalom against the king's orders, a report delivered to David by The Cushite Messenger (2 Samuel 18:14–32). The book concludes with the suppression of a secondary revolt by Sheba, and David’s purchase of a threshing floor from Ornan to build an altar (2 Samuel 20:22, 24:24–25). These events establish the Davidic dynasty as the permanent line of kingship for the nation of Israel (2 Samuel 7:12–16).
