Ancient tribal leaders gather near a desert encampment in a dry valley with stone wells and distant grazing flocks.

People of the tribe of Simeon.

The Tribe of Simeon consists of the descendants of the second son of Jacob and Leah, whose history is recorded across the books of Genesis, Numbers, Joshua, and 1 Chronicles. The patriarch Simeon is described as a man of violence who participated in the massacre at Shechem, an act that led his father to prophesy that his descendants would be scattered throughout Israel (Genesis 34:25–30, Genesis 49:5–7). During the migration to Egypt, the tribe was established through his sons, including Jemuel, the firstborn who founded a tribal clan, and Shaul, who began the Shaulite line (Genesis 46:10). Other sons who established family lines during the Egyptian sojourn included Jamin, Jachin, and Ohad (Genesis 46:10).

During the wilderness wanderings following the Exodus, the tribe was led by Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai, who served as the tribal prince and presented offerings at the dedication of the Tabernacle (Numbers 1:6, Numbers 7:36). The census records indicate that the tribe’s population fluctuated significantly, and by the time the land of Canaan was divided, the tribe did not receive a distinct, continuous territory of its own. Instead, the text states that their inheritance was located within the portion assigned to the tribe of Judah because Judah’s share was larger than they needed (Joshua 19:1–9).

Genealogical records from the period of the monarchy highlight the continued presence of the tribe through various leaders and families. Shimei is noted for having a large family of sixteen sons and six daughters, though the text observes that his brothers did not have many children (1 Chronicles 4:26–27). During the reign of Hezekiah several Simeonite princes, including Meshobab, Jesimiel, and Jaakobah led an expedition to the valley of Gedor to seek pasture for their flocks, where they destroyed the existing inhabitants and settled in their place (1 Chronicles 4:34–41). Another group of five hundred Simeonites, led by Pelatiah, and Neariah traveled to Mount Seir to defeat the remaining Amalekites (1 Chronicles 4:42–43).

The history of the tribe reflects the fulfillment of the patriarchal blessing regarding their dispersal. Because their towns were geographically surrounded by Judah, the Simeonites remained a distinct but integrated group within the southern kingdom. The text records that many Simeonites eventually moved or were absorbed, yet individuals like Ziza, and Jehu maintained their tribal identity through the genealogical records of the royal chronicles (1 Chronicles 4:35–38). The tribe is ultimately included in the prophetic visions of the restored land, where they are assigned a specific gate in the holy city (Ezekiel 48:33).
