King Solomon sits on his throne in a stone courtyard, judging a dispute between two women near the rising walls of the first Temple.

Every person who appears in the book of 1 Kings, ordered by how often they are mentioned there.

The People of 1 Kings are the central figures in a narrative that spans the transition from a united monarchy to a fractured land of two competing kingdoms. The book begins with the final days of David, whose physical decline prompts a succession crisis (1 Kings 1:1–4). Adonijah attempts to seize the throne by gathering supporters, but Nathan the Prophet intervenes by alerting Bathsheba to the plot (1 Kings 1:5–27). Following David’s instructions, Benaiah secures the city and executes the king’s rivals, including Joab, who had supported the rebellion (1 Kings 2:28–35).

Once established as king, Solomon consolidates power and expands the international influence of the nation. He forms a strategic alliance with Pharaoh, and receives vast quantities of cedar and gold from Hiram, to construct a temple (1 Kings 3:1, 5:1–12). His reputation for discernment is demonstrated when he resolves a dispute between The Two Mothers Before Solomon regarding a single living infant (1 Kings 3:16–28). Later, The Queen of Sheba travels from a distant land to test his intellect with difficult questions, confirming that his wealth and wisdom exceed the reports she had heard (1 Kings 10:1–13).

The unity of the nation collapses after Solomon’s death when his son, Rehoboam refuses to lighten the labor tax, leading the northern tribes to revolt (1 Kings 12:1–19). Jeroboam son of Nebat becomes the first king of the northern territory, known as Israel, while the southern territory remains under the tribe of Judah (1 Kings 12:20). The subsequent history is marked by conflict and religious shifts. Elijah the Tishbite emerges as a primary antagonist to Ahab, and his wife Jezebel, who together promote the worship of foreign deities (1 Kings 17:1, 18:18–19). Elijah famously challenges The Prophets of Baal to a contest of fire on Mount Carmel to prove which deity is supreme (1 Kings 18:20–40).

The book concludes with the persistent warfare between the two kingdoms and their neighbors. While Asa, is noted for removing idols from the southern land, the northern kings face internal coups and external threats (1 Kings 15:9–14). Ben-hadad leads the Aramean forces in repeated sieges against the north (1 Kings 20:1). The narrative ends with the death of Ahab, who ignores the warning of Micaiah, and falls in battle, leaving the divided nations in a state of ongoing political and spiritual instability (1 Kings 22:13–40).
