Tribe of Naphtali

The Tribe of Naphtali consists of the descendants of the sixth son of Jacob, whose origins and territorial inheritance are detailed across the books of Genesis, Numbers, and Joshua. The patriarch Naphtali was born to Bilhah, the handmaid of Rachel, who named him to signify a personal struggle (Genesis 30:7–8). Before his death, Jacob described this son as a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns (Genesis 49:21). During the census in the wilderness, the tribe was led by Ahira, who served as the tribal chief (Numbers 1:15). This Ahira was the son of Enan, a man identified as the head of a paternal house (Numbers 2:29).

The internal structure of the tribe was established through four primary clans named after the sons of the patriarch. Jahzeel was the firstborn son who founded the Jahzeelite clan (Genesis 46:24). Another son, Guni established the Gunite clan (Numbers 26:48). The third son was Jezer, the ancestor of the Jezerite clan (Numbers 26:49). The fourth son, Shillem founded the Shillemite clan (Numbers 26:49). Later in the history of the tribe, a man named Abinoam appears as a resident of Kedesh in Naphtali (Judges 4:6). His son was Barak, a commander who summoned ten thousand men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun to fight against the forces of Jabin (Judges 4:6–10).

The geographical allotment for the tribe was located in the northern region of Canaan encompassing the hill country and the area bordering the Sea of Chinnereth (Joshua 19:32–39). The text describes this territory as including fortified cities and reaching to the Jordan River (Joshua 19:33–35). During the period of the judges, Barak led the tribal forces to Mount Tabor to engage the Canaanite army (Judges 4:12–14). The tribe is also noted for its military contribution to David at Hebron providing thousands of captains and soldiers equipped with shields and spears (1 Chronicles 12:34). In the prophetic tradition, the land of Naphtali is identified as a region that saw a great light after experiencing the gloom of invasion (Isaiah 9:1–2).
