Jerioth is situated within the expansive genealogy of the tribe of Judah, specifically the branch originating from Hezron, a grandson of Judah. According to 1 Chronicles 2:18, she was a partner of Caleb (the son of Hezron, not to be confused with Caleb the spy, son of Jephunneh). The biblical text states: "Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth" (BSB). This placement highlights her role in the foundational growth of the most influential tribe in Israel's history.

Major Life Events

The biblical record does not preserve specific narrative events for Jerioth, such as her birth, death, or personal interactions. Her existence is recorded solely to clarify the lineage of the Calebites. The Hebrew text of 1 Chronicles 2:18 is notoriously difficult to translate; some scholars suggest Jerioth may have been a second wife, a concubine, or even a daughter of Caleb and Azubah, though the standard reading identifies her as a woman by whom Caleb fathered children.

Relationship to Other Biblical Figures

Jerioth’s primary connection is to her husband, Caleb son of Hezron. The text lists three sons—Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon—specifically as the "sons of Azubah," which has led some commentators to question which children, if any, are attributed to Jerioth. One tradition suggests that Mesha (mentioned later in the chapter) may have been her descendant. Her relationship with Azubah appears to be one of co-wives within a polygamous patriarchal structure common to the era.

Spiritual Significance

While Jerioth lacks a narrative arc, her inclusion in the Chronicler’s genealogy signifies the importance of every individual within the covenant community. In the post-exilic context in which Chronicles was written, these lists served to provide the returning Israelites with a sense of identity and legal claim to their ancestral lands. Jerioth represents the often-unseen women who contributed to the biological and social continuity of the line of Judah, the tribe from which the Messiah would eventually come.
