Women of the Old Testament

The biblical record identifies various Women of the Old Testament who occupy specific roles as matriarchs, queens, prophetesses, mothers, and workers. These roles are often defined by their relationship to the covenant family of Israel or their influence on the political and spiritual direction of the nation. The text describes Sarah as the matriarch who conceived Isaac in her old age to fulfill a divine promise (Genesis 17:15–19). Miriam is identified as a leader who directed the Israelites in worship after the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20–21). Deborah held a formal office of leadership, commanding military action and settling legal disputes under a palm tree (Judges 4:4–6).

The text also highlights women who exercised authority within royal courts or through specialized wisdom. Esther became the queen of Persia and risked her life to appeal to the king to prevent the destruction of her people (Esther 7:1–6). In contrast, Jezebel is recorded as a queen of Israel who used her position to kill the prophets of the Lord and establish the worship of Baal (1 Kings 18:4). The Wise Woman of Tekoa acted as a skilled rhetorician, using a fictional parable to influence King David’s judicial decisions regarding his son (2 Samuel 14:1–20). Other women, such as The Medium of Endor, occupied prohibited roles, such as when she summoned the spirit of a deceased prophet at the request of King Saul (1 Samuel 28:7–14).

Domestic and maternal roles frequently intersect with the survival of the community or the fulfillment of lineage. Hannah is depicted as a woman who dedicated her firstborn son to temple service in response to a vow made during her years of infertility (1 Samuel 1:11–28). Hagar, an Egyptian servant, is noted as the first woman in the text to receive a direct divine revelation while fleeing in the wilderness (Genesis 16:7–13). The Widow of Zarephath provided food for the prophet Elijah during a famine and witnessed the resuscitation of her son (1 Kings 17:8–24).

These women are central to the progression of the biblical narrative, often acting at critical turning points where the future of the nation is at stake. Rahab, a Canaanite woman, ensured the success of the conquest of Jericho by hiding Israelite spies (Joshua 2:1–14). Ruth, a Moabite widow, chose to join the people of Israel and eventually became an ancestor of the Davidic monarchy (Ruth 4:13–17). Whether through official titles or individual actions, these figures are presented as essential participants in the historical and genealogical record of the Old Testament.
