People of Exodus

The book of Exodus begins by listing the sons of Israel who arrived in Egypt, including Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah (Exodus 1:1–4). The text notes that Joseph was already in Egypt, but after his generation died, a new Pharaoh rose to power and enslaved the people (Exodus 1:6–11). During this period of oppression, Pharaoh's Daughter Who Rescued Moses discovered a Hebrew infant in the Nile and raised him in the royal court (Exodus 2:5–10). After killing an Egyptian Taskmaster who was beating a slave, Moses fled to Midian, where he married Zipporah and fathered Gershom (Exodus 2:11–22).

The narrative shifts when God commissions Moses at the burning bush, citing his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Exodus 3:6). Because Moses expressed doubt regarding his speech, God appointed Aaron to serve as his spokesman (Exodus 4:14–16). The two brothers confronted Pharaoh, who refused to release the people despite the signs performed by Moses and the initial attempts of The Magicians of Egypt to replicate them (Exodus 7:10–11). Following the final plague, the Israelites departed Egypt, and Miriam led the women in a song of victory after the crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20–21).

As the nation moved into the wilderness, Jethro visited Moses and provided counsel on establishing a judicial system to manage the people's disputes (Exodus 18:13–24). At Mount Sinai, The Seventy Elders of Israel accompanied Moses up the mountain to behold a vision of God (Exodus 24:9–11). The text then details the construction of the Tabernacle, led by Bezalel, and Oholiab, who were divinely empowered to craft the sacred furnishings (Exodus 31:1–6). During this time, the priesthood was established through Aaron and his sons, including Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar (Exodus 28:1).

The book of Exodus concludes with the completion of the Tabernacle, marking the transition of the Israelites from a group of enslaved laborers to a structured religious community. This transformation is supported by the military leadership of Joshua, who defended the people against attackers (Exodus 17:9), and the support of Hur of the Tribe of Judah, who assisted Moses during battle (Exodus 17:10). By the end of the account, the presence of God fills the completed sanctuary, guiding the nation through the leadership of the Levite clans descended from Kohath, Gershon, and Merari (Exodus 6:16–19, 40:34–38).
