A series of ancient kings and princes stand behind a royal scroll and a small green branch growing from a cut stump.

The royal descent from David, the family through which the promise of an everlasting throne runs.

The Line of David is a royal genealogy that traces the biological and legal succession of the kings of Judah and their descendants. The primary records of this lineage appear in the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, which document the rise of the monarchy, and in the New Testament, which connects these figures to the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:1–17; Luke 3:23–38). The line begins with David, the king who established the dynasty in Jerusalem and received a promise that his throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:12–16).

The text organizes this group through successive generations, often highlighting the transition from father to son despite internal family conflicts. Solomon succeeded his father as king and built the first Temple (1 Kings 2:12), while his brother Absalom led a failed rebellion that threatened the stability of the house (2 Samuel 15:1–12). Later, Rehoboam presided over the division of the kingdom, retaining only the southern territory for the Davidic line (1 Kings 12:17–20). The lineage includes reformers such as Hezekiah, who survived the Assyrian siege (2 Kings 19:15–19), and Josiah, who renewed the covenant after finding the Book of the Law (2 Kings 23:1–3). It also includes figures like Ahaz, who introduced foreign altars into the Temple (2 Kings 16:10–11).

Even after the Babylonian conquest ended the physical monarchy, the text continues to track the descendants. Jehoiachin was taken into captivity but later received a seat of honor in Babylon (2 Kings 25:27–30), and his son Shealtiel is listed as a vital link during the exile (1 Chronicles 3:17). The line returned to Jerusalem through Zerubbabel, who oversaw the rebuilding of the Temple foundation (Ezra 3:8). The genealogy eventually concludes its biblical record with Joseph, who is identified as a descendant of David (Matthew 1:16).

This lineage serves as the framework for the biblical narrative of kingship and divine promise. The text emphasizes that despite the failures of individual rulers or the destruction of the city, the line remained intact through the centuries. By documenting these names, the writers establish a continuous historical link between the original covenant made with David and the eventual arrival of his final heir.
