Priests

The biblical record identifies various individuals as Priests, a role primarily established to mediate between the people and God through the management of the sanctuary and the performance of sacrifices. While the first person described as a priest of the Most High God is Melchizedek, a king who blessed Abraham (Genesis 14:18), the formal Israelite priesthood was later restricted to the descendants of the tribe of Levi. Aaron was appointed as the first High Priest to serve as a spokesman and leader of the Tabernacle (Exodus 4:14). His sons, including Eleazar, and Ithamar were also consecrated to the service, though his elder sons Nadab, and Abihu were killed by divine fire for offering unauthorized incense (Exodus 6:23, Leviticus 10:1–2).

The organization of the priesthood followed strict genealogical lines, typically descending through the house of Eleazar, who succeeded his father and assisted in dividing the Promised Land (Numbers 20:26–28). Phinehas secured a perpetual covenant for his lineage after executing an idolatrous couple to stay a plague (Numbers 25:11–13). During the period of the judges and early monarchy, Eli served as High Priest at Shiloh, though his sons Hophni and Phinehas were judged for their corruption (1 Samuel 1:3, 2:12–17). Later, Zadok maintained the high priestly lineage during the reign of Solomon, while Abiathar was removed from office for supporting a rival claimant to the throne (1 Kings 2:26–35).

Priests also played significant roles during the periods of the monarchy and the return from exile. Jehoiada was instrumental in restoring the Davidic throne by hiding the infant Joash from a murderous queen (2 Kings 11:4). Centuries later, Hilkiah the High Priest discovered the Book of the Law during temple renovations, sparking a national reformation (2 Kings 22:8). Following the Babylonian captivity, Joshua led the efforts to rebuild the Second Temple (Haggai 1:1), and Ezra the Scribe worked to restore the observance of the Law among the returning exiles (Ezra 7:1–10).

The office of the priest remained central to the religious life of Israel until the New Testament era. Annas and his son-in-law Caiaphas held the high priesthood during the Roman occupation and presided over the legal proceedings involving Jesus (Luke 3:2, Matthew 26:3). Throughout the text, the priesthood serves as the primary mechanism for maintaining the covenant through the presentation of blood sacrifices and the teaching of the Law (Leviticus 16:32–34, Malachi 2:7).
