Ancient Israelite leaders and prophets stand together in a courtyard overlooking the hill country of Samaria.

People of the breakaway northern kingdom of Israel, from Jeroboam son of Nebat to the fall of Samaria.

The Northern Kingdom (Israel) consisted of the ten tribes that broke away from the house of David to form a separate sovereign state. This political entity is primarily documented in the books of 1 Kings, 2 Kings, and 1 Chronicles, as well as the writings of several prophets. The text describes a succession of dynasties characterized by frequent internal conflict, military expansion, and religious tension. The kingdom was established after the death of Solomon and persisted until the fall of its capital, Samaria, to the Assyrian Empire (2 Kings 17:5–6).

The leadership of the kingdom was defined by a series of kings and the prophets who confronted them. Omri founded the city of Samaria and established a powerful dynasty that significantly influenced the region (1 Kings 16:16–24). His son, Ahab promoted the worship of Baal after marrying Jezebel, which led to a direct spiritual confrontation with Elijah the Tishbite (1 Kings 16:30–32, 1 Kings 17:1). Later, Jehu executed the house of Ahab and destroyed the temple of Baal to seize control of the throne (2 Kings 10:18–28). During the reign of Jeroboam son of Jehoash, the nation saw a restoration of its borders from Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah (2 Kings 14:25). However, the kingdom eventually collapsed under Hoshea, who was the final monarch to preside over the fall of Samaria and the subsequent Assyrian exile (2 Kings 17:1–6).

Beyond the royal court, the Northern Kingdom (Israel) included various tribal leaders and prophetic figures who shaped its social and religious life. Elisha succeeded Elijah and performed numerous miracles, such as healing Naaman the leper and raising the dead (2 Kings 2:15, 2 Kings 4:32–35, 2 Kings 5:14). The prophet Hosea used his own marriage to an unfaithful woman to symbolize the broken relationship between the nation and God (Hosea 1:2). Genealogies in 1 Chronicles record tribal figures like Izrahiah, a chief of the tribe of Issachar, and Jahdiel, a mighty man of valor from the tribe of Manasseh (1 Chronicles 7:3, 1 Chronicles 5:24).

The history of the Northern Kingdom (Israel) serves as a narrative of religious departure and eventual judgment within the biblical record. The text emphasizes that the kingdom’s downfall was a direct result of its persistent worship at the golden calves in Bethel and Dan and its rejection of the warnings delivered by prophets like Amos and Jonah (2 Kings 17:21–23, Amos 7:10, 2 Kings 14:25). The eventual deportation of the population marked the end of the ten tribes as a distinct political entity in the land.
