People of Mark

The People of Mark appear in a narrative that begins in the wilderness and concludes at an empty tomb. The account opens with John the Baptist, who preaches a baptism of repentance and identifies Jesus as the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:4–8). As Jesus begins his ministry, he calls Andrew and his brother Peter to leave their nets and follow him (Mark 1:16–18). The text describes Jesus selecting twelve apostles to be with him, including James son of Zebedee and John the Apostle, whom he nicknames the Sons of Thunder (Mark 3:17). These followers witness Jesus interacting with diverse figures, such as the Syrophoenician Woman, who argues that even dogs eat the crumbs under the table to secure healing for her daughter (Mark 7:26–28).

The middle of the narrative focuses on the challenges of faith and the cost of following Jesus. The Rich Young Ruler approaches Jesus to ask about eternal life but leaves grieving because he has many possessions (Mark 10:17–22). In contrast, the Widow with Two Mites is praised for putting her whole livelihood into the treasury (Mark 12:42–44). The text also records moments of desperation, such as when The Father of the Boy with an Unclean Spirit asks Jesus to help his unbelief while his son suffers (Mark 9:24). During the Transfiguration, the text notes the appearance of Moses and Elijah the Tishbite, who talk with Jesus on a high mountain (Mark 9:4).

The final arc of the book centers on the trial and crucifixion in Jerusalem. Judas Iscariot conspires with the religious leaders to hand Jesus over (Mark 14:10–11). During the proceedings, Pilate offers to release a prisoner, but the crowd chooses Barabbas instead (Mark 15:15). As Jesus is led away, the soldiers compel Simon of Cyrene, the father of Rufus, to carry the cross (Mark 15:21). After the death of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea requests the body and places it in a tomb hewn out of rock (Mark 15:43–46). The narrative ends with Mary Magdalene and Salome discovering the stone rolled away and hearing that Jesus has risen (Mark 16:1–6).
