The text organizes these seventy names into three primary branches, stating that from these individuals the nations spread out over the earth after the flood (Genesis 10:32). Each branch is categorized by its own language, territory, and clan structure (Genesis 10:5, 20, 31).

The lineage of Japheth is listed first, focusing on the maritime and northern regions. Within this group, Gomer appears as the eldest son of Japheth (Genesis 10:2), while Magog and Madai are identified as his brothers (Genesis 10:2). The text also names Ashkenaz as a son of Gomer (Genesis 10:3). The lineage of Ham follows, representing the southern and African regions. This section includes Mizraim, who is the progenitor of various tribal groups (Genesis 10:6), and Canaan, who is identified as the father of Sidon (Genesis 10:15). The text highlights Nimrod, a son of Cush, as a mighty hunter before the LORD and the first to become a mighty man on earth (Genesis 10:8–9).

The final branch traces the descendants of Shem, who is described as the ancestor of all the sons of Eber (Genesis 10:21). This line includes Arpachshad, who was born after the flood (Genesis 10:22), and Shelah, who became the father of Eber (Genesis 10:24). The text further details the family of Joktan, a descendant of Eber listing his thirteen sons such as Almodad, Hazarmaveth, and Ophir (Genesis 10:26–29). Other Semitic figures mentioned include Aram, the father of Uz (Genesis 10:23), and Lud (Genesis 10:22).
