Jerimoth, Levite Musician of the Divided Monarchy

Background and Family

Jerimoth was born into a family of high spiritual and musical standing. His father, Heman, was not only a musician but held the title of the "king’s seer" (1 Chronicles 25:5). According to the biblical record, God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters to exalt his horn, signaling a divine blessing upon the household. Jerimoth was one of these fourteen sons, growing up alongside brothers such as Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.

As a member of the Tribe of Levi, Jerimoth was set apart for the service of the Lord. The specific branch of Heman belonged to the Kohathites, who were historically responsible for the most sacred elements of the Tabernacle and later the Temple. By the time of Jerimoth, this service had been refined by David into a professional guild of musicians and singers.

The primary event recorded in the life of Jerimoth is his formal appointment to the temple service. King David, along with the commanders of the army, set apart the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres, and cymbals.

To ensure order and fairness in the ministry, the assignments were determined by casting lots. The text emphasizes that these lots were cast for small and great alike, for the teacher as well as the student. When the lots were cast, the fifteenth lot fell to Jerimoth. This appointment placed him in charge of a division consisting of twelve men, comprised of his own sons and brothers. This structure ensured that the worship of the Lord was conducted continuously and with a high degree of skill.
