Zabdi, Grandson of Zerah

Zabdi was a member of the tribe of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. Specifically, he belonged to the branch of the Zerahites, named for his father, Zerah. Zerah was one of the twin sons born to Judah and Tamar (Genesis 38:30). According to the genealogical records found in 1 Chronicles 2:6, Zabdi is identified as one of the five sons of Zerah, alongside his brothers Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara (notably, he is referred to as 'Zimri' in 1 Chronicles 2:6, a common orthographic variation in Hebrew where the letters 'dalet' and 'resh' are easily confused, though he is consistently identified as Zabdi in the book of Joshua).

Zabdi’s family line was substantial and influential within the tribal structure of Judah. He is recorded as the father of Carmi, who in turn was the father of Achan. This three-generation descent highlights Zabdi's role as a patriarch of a specific "house of fathers" within the larger Zerahite clan.

Major Life Events

While the biblical text does not provide a narrative of Zabdi’s personal exploits or his individual faith, his name is central to the judicial proceedings following the fall of Jericho. In Joshua 7, the Israelites suffered a humiliating defeat at Ai because one individual had violated the herem (the ban), stealing items devoted to destruction.

To identify the culprit, Joshua oversaw a process of elimination by lot. The text records that the tribe of Judah was selected, followed by the clan of the Zerahites. Within that clan, the "family of Zabdi" was selected (Joshua 7:17). Finally, the household was brought forward "man by man," and the lot fell upon Achan, the son of Carmi and grandson of Zabdi. This process suggests that Zabdi was recognized as the living or ancestral head of a specific legal and social unit within the tribe, a position of considerable communal responsibility.

Relationship to Other Biblical Figures

Zabdi’s primary relationships are defined by his ancestry and his descendants. As the son of Zerah, he was a first-generation descendant of the patriarchs who entered Egypt. His brothers—Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara—are noted in 1 Kings 4:31 as men of great wisdom, providing a context of intellectual and social stature for Zabdi’s immediate family. As the grandfather of Achan, his name is inextricably linked to one of the most sobering accounts of judgment in the Old Testament, though the text does not directly attribute Achan's sin to Zabdi's upbringing or character.
