Apostles
Who is on this listThe BSB calls the person an apostle by name, or names the person among the apostles.
Everyone the Bible calls an apostle by name.
An apostle is one who is sent. Luke records that Jesus "chose twelve of them, whom He also designated as apostles" (Luke 6:13), and when the lot fell to Matthias, "he was added to the eleven apostles" (Acts 1:26). Those thirteen names make up The Twelve Apostles, and every one of them is on this list.
The word does not stop with the Twelve. At Lystra Luke writes of "the apostles Barnabas and Paul" (Acts 14:14), naming Barnabas alongside Paul. Paul greets Andronicus and Junia as "outstanding among the apostles" (Romans 16:7). Recalling his first visit to Jerusalem, he says he saw "none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother" (Galatians 1:19), which counts James among them. The letter to the Thessalonians opens in the names of Paul, Silas and Timothy (1 Thessalonians 1:1), and goes on to say that "as apostles of Christ we had authority to demand it" (1 Thessalonians 2:6).
This list follows the word. It admits a person only where a verse applies it to that person by name, so it is wider than the Twelve but no wider than the text.
