Asriel, Son of Gilead

Background and Family

Asriel appears in the biblical record as a significant figure within the genealogy of the tribe of Manasseh. According to the census records in the Book of Numbers, he was the son of Gilead, who was the grandson of Manasseh through Machir. This lineage places Asriel in the third generation of those born following the initial descent into Egypt, though the specific timing of his life spans the late Egyptian period and the Wilderness era.

Asriel was one of six brothers, including Abiezer, Helek, Shechem, Shemida, and Hepher. Together, these siblings formed the patriarchal heads of the six major clans of Manasseh. The biblical text emphasizes this brotherhood to establish the legal and ancestral framework for the tribe’s future territorial claims in the Levant.

While the Bible does not record specific dialogue or personal deeds performed by Asriel, his name appears during two critical moments in Israel’s national history. The first occurs in Numbers 26:31 during the census taken on the plains of Moab. This census was conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest to determine the number of men aged twenty and older who were fit for war and to provide a basis for the division of the Promised Land. The text notes the existence of the "Asrielite clan from Asriel," confirming that by the end of the forty-year wilderness journey, his descendants had grown into a robust and distinct social unit within the nation.

The clans of the descendants of Manasseh were: from Machir, the Machirite clan (Machir was the father of Gilead); from Gilead, the Gileadite clan. These were the descendants of Gilead: the Iezerite clan from Iezer, the Helekite clan from Helek, the Asrielite clan from Asriel... (Numbers 26:29–31)

The second mention occurs in Joshua 17:2 during the actual division of the land west of the Jordan River. After the initial conquest of the central hill country, Joshua assigned portions to the "rest of the descendants of Manasseh." Asriel is listed among the male heads of these clans who received an inheritance. This inclusion signifies that Asriel’s lineage was recognized as having full legal rights to the land alongside the other major families of Joseph.

Relationship to Other Biblical Figures

Asriel is deeply integrated into the family of Joseph. As a grandson of Machir, he belonged to a branch of the tribe known for its military prowess and leadership. His relationship with his brothers—particularly Hepher—is significant because it sets the stage for the famous legal case of the Daughters of Zelophehad. Since Zelophehad was the son of Hepher (Asriel’s brother), Asriel was the great-uncle to the five women who successfully petitioned Moses for the right to inherit land in the absence of male heirs. This connection highlights the tight-knit clan structure that Asriel helped establish.

Spiritual Significance

In the context of the Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua, Asriel represents the fulfillment of the divine promise to Joseph that his descendants would be fruitful and multiply.
