Obadiah was a member of the tribe of Levi, specifically descended from the line of Merari. The Merarites were one of the three primary divisions of Levites, historically responsible for the structural components of the Tabernacle, such as the frames, crossbars, and pillars. By the time of the Divided Monarchy, their roles had evolved, but they remained central to the maintenance and oversight of the Temple in Jerusalem. The biblical record in 2 Chronicles 34:12 explicitly links Obadiah with his fellow Merarite, Jahath, as they led their kinsmen in the service of King Josiah.

The defining moment of Obadiah’s life, as recorded in Scripture, occurred during the eighteenth year of King Josiah's reign (c. 622 BC). Following the discovery of the Book of the Law in the Temple, Josiah initiated a nationwide purge of idolatry and a physical restoration of the Temple. Obadiah was selected as an overseer for this project. The text emphasizes that the men involved "did the work faithfully."

Obadiah’s supervision was not merely bureaucratic; the passage notes that he and his fellow Levites were "skilled with musical instruments." This suggests that Obadiah likely integrated the Levites' traditional role of worship and music into the labor of reconstruction, maintaining a spiritual atmosphere even during the strenuous physical work of masonry and carpentry.

While they reported to the high officials appointed by Josiah—such as Shaphan the scribe and Hilkiah the high priest—their direct interaction was with the laborers who were repairing the breaches in the Temple walls.

Obadiah represents the "faithful remnant" within the Levitical priesthood during a time of national revival. His inclusion in the genealogical and historical record of 2 Chronicles serves to highlight the importance of integrity in service.
