He belonged to the Tribe of Judah, specifically the branch descending from the kings of Judah. His father was Eleazar and his son was Jacob. Because Matthew 1:16 identifies Jacob as the father of Joseph, Matthan is recognized as Joseph's paternal grandfather.

His inclusion in Matthew 1:15 serves as a formal witness to the continuity of the messianic line.
