People of Malachi

The book of Malachi contains the final prophetic messages of the Hebrew Bible, delivered through a series of disputes between God and the post-exilic community. The text identifies the speaker as Malachi, whose name means my messenger, and who addresses the spiritual and social failures of the people (Malachi 1:1). The narrative begins by contrasting the divine choice of two brothers, stating that God loved Jacob, also known as Israel, while rejecting his brother Esau (Malachi 1:2–3). This distinction serves as the foundation for the prophet’s call to the nation to return to their covenant obligations.

The text focuses heavily on the corruption of the priesthood and the social injustices within the community. The prophet invokes the name of Levi, to remind the current priests of the original covenant of life and peace made with their ancestor (Malachi 2:4–5). The people are rebuked for their unfaithfulness to one another, specifically regarding the marriage covenant, which has led to the profaning of the sanctuary of Judah (Malachi 2:11). The text describes a community that has grown weary of serving God, prompting a warning that a messenger will come to purify the sons of Levi so they may offer righteous sacrifices again (Malachi 3:3).

In its concluding section, the book looks backward to the foundations of the law and forward to a future day of judgment. The text commands the people to remember the law of Moses, who received statutes and ordinances at Horeb for all the people (Malachi 4:4). The final verses promise the return of Elijah the Tishbite, who is sent to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and children to their fathers before the arrival of the day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5–6). By connecting the legal authority of Moses with the prophetic restoration of Elijah the Tishbite, the book closes the prophetic canon with an emphasis on reconciliation and adherence to the covenant.
