Ben was a member of the tribe of Levi, the priestly class set apart for the service of the Tabernacle and later the Temple. While the text of 1 Chronicles 15:18 does not explicitly name his father or his specific clan (Gershonite, Kohathite, or Merarite), his inclusion among the 'brothers next in rank' suggests he was a seasoned official within the Levite hierarchy. During the era of the United Monarchy’s foundations—specifically the reign of David—the Levites were organized into rigorous divisions to ensure that every aspect of worship was conducted with order and excellence.

Major Life Events

The sole recorded event in Ben's life is his appointment to the musical processional for the Ark of the Covenant. After the initial failed attempt to move the Ark, King David realized that only the Levites were authorized to carry it. As part of this renewed effort, David commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers and musicians. Ben was selected as one of the fourteen men of the 'second rank.'
