Background and Family

Hushim is first introduced in the book of Genesis within the context of the migration of Jacob’s household to Egypt. As the son of Dan, he was a grandson of the patriarch Jacob and the handmaid Bilhah. The record in Genesis 46:23 states simply, "The son of Dan: Hushim." This singular mention is notable because, unlike many of his uncles who fathered multiple sons, Dan is recorded as having only this one child at the time of the descent into Egypt.

Major Life Events

The historical footprint of Hushim is primarily found in the census records of the Israelite nation. He traveled with his father and grandfather to Egypt to escape the famine in Canaan, participating in the formative years of the Israelite settlement in Goshen.

In the second census of Israel, taken on the plains of Moab near the end of the wilderness wanderings, the name appears with a linguistic variation. Numbers 26:42 records, "These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: The Shuhamite clan from Shuham." Biblical scholars generally identify Shuham as a variation of the name Hushim, likely due to a transposition of Hebrew letters (metathesis) common in ancient genealogical records. This passage confirms that the entire tribal identity of Dan was channeled through this one individual.

Relationship to Other Biblical Figures

As the only son of Dan, Hushim occupied a unique position. He was the nephew of figures such as Joseph, Judah, and Levi. His status as an only child meant that the future of the tribe of Dan rested entirely upon his lineage. This biological bottleneck makes the subsequent growth of his family particularly striking in the narrative of the Pentateuch.

Spiritual Significance

The significance of Hushim lies in the theme of divine multiplication. When the family of Jacob entered Egypt, Hushim was a lone descendant of Dan. However, by the time of the Exodus and the subsequent census in the wilderness, the "Shuhamite clans" numbered 64,400 men of fighting age (Numbers 26:43). This represents one of the largest tribal populations, surpassed only by Judah.

In a theological context, Hushim serves as a testament to the fulfillment of the patriarchal blessings. Despite starting from a single heir, the tribe of Dan became a significant force within the congregation of Israel. His name, though appearing in few verses, anchors the genealogy of a tribe that would later produce famous figures like the judge Samson.
