A group of ancient Judean men gather in a stone temple courtyard to solemnly authorize a blank administrative scroll.

The men named in Ezra 10 who had married foreign wives and who publicly pledged to put the matter right — one of the longest name lists in the postexilic record.

The Ezra 10 List is a detailed roster of Judean men who had married foreign women and subsequently pledged to dissolve those marriages during the reforms of the priest Ezra. The account begins with a public assembly in Jerusalem where the people confessed to breaking the law by intermarrying with neighboring populations (Ezra 10:1–12). The text records that a commission was formed to examine each case individually, a process that lasted three months (Ezra 10:16–17). The resulting list serves as a formal record of those who agreed to put away their wives and children to maintain the religious purity of the post-exilic community.

The roster is organized hierarchically, beginning with the religious leadership before moving to the general population. It starts with the priests, such as Eliezer, and Gedaliah both of whom offered a ram as a guilt offering (Ezra 10:18–19). The list continues through various priestly families, including Maaseiah of the Pashhur Clan and Elasah (Ezra 10:22). Following the priests, the text identifies Levites like Jozabad, and specialized temple servants such as Telem, who served as a gatekeeper (Ezra 10:23–24).

The remainder of the list catalogs the lay Israelites, grouped by their ancestral houses or clans. Among the descendants of Parosh are men like Ramiah and Izziah (Ezra 10:25). The family of Zattu includes Eliashib, and Zabad (Ezra 10:27). The largest group mentioned belongs to the descendants of Bani, which includes Malluch, and Adaiah (Ezra 10:29). Other clans represented include the descendants of Bebai such as Hananiah, and the descendants of Nebo, including Jaddai and Zebina (Ezra 10:28, 43).

This list functions as a concluding document for the book of Ezra emphasizing the community's commitment to the Mosaic law after returning from the Babylonian captivity. By naming specific individuals like Shemariah, and Shimei, the text provides a concrete account of the social and domestic upheaval required to re-establish a distinct identity in the land (Ezra 10:32, 38). The record ends by noting that some of these men had children by their foreign wives, though the text does not say what became of the families after the separation (Ezra 10:44).
