Those the Bible shows working the soil or raising livestock.
The first farmer in Scripture is Cain, "a tiller of the soil" (Genesis 4:2). His descendant Jabal "was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock" (Genesis 4:20). After the flood, "Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard" (Genesis 9:20), making Noah the first vinegrower the text names.
Elijah found Elisha "plowing with twelve teams of oxen" when he threw his cloak around him (1 Kings 19:19). King Uzziah had much livestock, dug cisterns, and "was a lover of the soil" (2 Chronicles 26:10). The prophet Amos told Amaziah the priest that he was no prophet’s son but "a herdsman and a tender of sycamore-fig trees" (Amos 7:14).
Those whose work is keeping sheep are on Shepherds instead.
