The organization of the group follows a strict pattern of birth, fatherhood, and death, beginning with Enosh during whose time people first began to call upon the name of the Lord (Genesis 4:26). The line continues through Kenan, who lived for a total of nine hundred and ten years (Genesis 5:14). He was followed by Mahalalel, who fathered his successor at age sixty-five and lived to be eight hundred and ninety-five (Genesis 5:15–17). The text then identifies Jared, who reached the age of nine hundred and sixty-two years (Genesis 5:20). His son was Enoch, a man who walked with God and did not experience death because God took him (Genesis 5:24). The lineage then produces Methuselah recorded as the longest-lived human at nine hundred and sixty-nine years (Genesis 5:27). The final figure before the flood narrative is Lamech, who named his son in the hope that he would bring comfort from the labor and painful toil of the ground (Genesis 5:29).

This genealogy serves as a bridge between the creation of humanity and the preservation of the species through the global deluge.
