Jeziel is identified in the Chronicler’s genealogy of David’s mighty men as the son of Azmaveth. He is specifically named alongside his brother, Pelet. While the text does not provide an exhaustive biography of his early life, his lineage from Azmaveth suggests a family of high military standing within the tribe of Benjamin. The setting for his appearance in the biblical narrative is the wilderness period of David’s life, specifically during his residence in Ziklag around 1010 BC. At this time, David was technically a vassal of the Philistines, yet he was secretly building a Hebrew coalition that would eventually form the core of his royal army.

The singular recorded event of Jeziel’s life is his journey to Ziklag to pledge fealty to David. According to 1 Chronicles 12, Jeziel was among the "mighty men" who helped David in his wars. By leaving Saul—a fellow Benjamite—to join David, Jeziel participated in a significant political defection.
