Peter's Denial

Following the seizure of Jesus, he was led to the house of the high priest while Peter followed at a distance (Luke 22:54). When those present kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight, looked closely at him, and stated that Peter was with Jesus (Luke 22:55-56). Peter denied the claim, stating that he did not know him.

A short time later, another person saw Peter and asserted that he was one of them, but Peter replied that he was not (Luke 22:58). About an hour passed before another man insisted that Peter was certainly with Jesus because he was a Galilean (Luke 22:59). Peter replied that he did not know what the man was talking about. Immediately, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

The Lord turned and looked at Peter, which caused Peter to remember the word the Lord had spoken to him regarding denying him three times before the rooster crowed that day (Luke 22:61). The text does not say what Jesus was doing immediately before the look, nor does it record any words spoken by Jesus during this specific encounter in the courtyard. Peter سپس went outside and wept bitterly (Luke 22:62).
